]]> Michelle Williams has had two Oscar Nominations (“Blue Valentine” and “Brokeback Mountain”) but the third time could definitely be the charm. I’m predicting a nod and a win for Michelle’s portrayal of film icon Marilyn Monroe in “My Week With Marilyn”, directed by Simon Curtis. Williams effortlessly capture the magic of Marilyn the Icon, but, more importantly she brings to life the vulnerability of a young woman struggling to be taken seriously as an artist.The film is based on the memoir of Colin Clark (played by Eddie Redmayne) who, as a well connected wannabe filmmaker, gets a gofer job on the set of 1956’s “The Prince and the Showgirl”. Kenneth Branaugh is perfect as the “Prince” film director and co-star, Sir Lawrence Olivier. Dame Judy Dench is wonderful as a supportive Dame Sybil Thorndike. We watch as the newly married Marilyn (to playwrite Arthur Miller) takes the young Colin into her confidence and he falls for her charms, as we all do. The period styling is superb and beautifully shot. If you’re a fan of the Turner Classic Movies channel no doubt you’ve seen the original “Prince And The Showgirl”. If so, you will be impressed with how these actors have captured the original characters. Emma Watson, Dominic Cooper, and Derek Jacobi round out a fine British cast. This is a light holiday treat that cinema fans shouldn’t miss.
