prairie_300Dust off your cowboy hat and head to Austin, Texas to attend the South by Southwest Film Festival’s opening night premiere of Robert Altman’s “A Prairie Home Companion” on March 10. The SXSW screening will be the North American premiere of Altman’s latest film, scheduled to arrive in theaters in June. Twin Cities voice-over talent and actors, Tim Russell and Sue Scott appear with Meryl Streep, Lindsay Lohan and Woody Harrelson in Robert Altman’s movie, a fictionalized film version of Garrison Keillor’s legendary radio variety show, “A Prairie Home Companion.” The premise for the film is that Keillor’s award-winning show is mysteriously canceled after 30 years on the air. As the ensemble of radio actors, musicians and back-stage crew prepare for their final live broadcast, old passions, feuds and grievances surface as their imperious stage manager (Tim Russell) tries to hold the radio show’s motley cast and crew together. Garrison Keillor plays himself in the movie. Sue Scott plays “Donna, the makeup lady.” The film also stars John C. Reilly, Lily Tomlin, Kevin Kline, Tommy Lee Jones, Virginia Madsen and Maya Rudolph. The movie was shot at the Fitzgerald Theater and at Mickey’s Diner in St. Paul, Minnesota in July 2005. (Photo: Melinda Sue Gordon)
