I know what your thinking, a funny cancer story? But co-writer , co-star Seth Rogen pulls it off with his usual skill at playing brash but oddly believable buddies in R-rated comedies. This time his buddy is Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a Public Radio producer diagnosed with a cancer that gives him a 50/50 chance of survival. How he deals with the diagnosis is dependent on his relationships with the people in his life: his smothering mother (Anjelica Houston), who he ties to keep out of the loop; his selfish girlfriend (Bryce Dallas Howard), who struggles to provide support; his young inexperienced counselor ( Anna Kendrick), who is in over her head but endearing nonetheless; and his best friend Kyle (Rogen) who proves his loyalty time and again with comedic skill. There are fine performances from all and a life-affirming experience for the film-goer.
