Micheal Shannon is an amazing actor. If you need bubbling psychosis, he’s your go to guy. I’ve been mesmerized by his performance each week as the troubled FBI guy on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and he dazzles here as the potentially schizophrenic construction worker Curtis who suffers disturbing dreams about impending doom. The dreams of deadly storms and other attacks cause him to begin expansion of his backyard storm shelter. The expense threatens his deaf daughter’s cochlear implant operation and the the patience of his wife Samantha ( the wonderfully proficient Jessica Chastain). Director Jeff Nichols creates an almost unbearable tension as we try to figure out if he’s nuts or psychic. The acting is superb, the special effects are well done and the ending will inspire discussion and perhaps some frustration for those who like everything neatly wrapped up.
